While the Orange County retail market has lost well-known home retailers such as Levitz Furniture, Wickes Furniture, Linens ’n Things and The Bombay Co., several companies have recently opened up home shops locally.

At Fashion Island in Newport Beach, Newport Cottages sells high-end U.S. hand-crafted furniture as well as décor from local artisans. The store features children’s beds, bunk beds, dressers, side tables, chandeliers, artwork and custom bedding. Nursery design and custom-made furniture are also services the store provides. Some recent celebrity nurseries featuring Newport Cottages include Halle Barry, Nicole Richie, Minnie Driver and Tori Spelling.

Stark Design Center & Outlet, which sells rugs, furniture and carpet, recently opened a 20,000-square-foot store at South Coast Collection, formerly the South Coast Home Furnishing Center in Costa Mesa.

Gwen David Designs opened a 1,500-square-foot store in Newport Beach at 1701 Corinthian Way. It sells silk flowers as well as paintings, Asian antiques, candleholders, handmade vases, silk embroidery art works, furniture and jewelry.
